Dr. Shigil Mathew Varghese, Consultant Physician and Diabetologist – Delivering Comprehensive Care for Patients

Dr. Shigil Mathew Varghese is a 38 years-old Consultant Physician and Diabetologist based in Kerala who has an expertise in delivering comprehensive care for patients for over seven years. He graduated from M.E.S Indian School in Doha, Qatar and thereafter, obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (M.B.B.S) degree from Sri Siddhartha Medical College in Tumkur, Karnataka. Dr. Shigil completed his internship period as a house surgeon at Sri Siddhartha Medical College and General Hospital in Eranakulam, Kerala. He later went on to pursue his post graduate studies from Vinayaka Missions Medical College and Hospital, Karaikal, Pondicherry, gaining his specialisation in Doctor of Medicine (M.D) General Medicine.

As a senior resident, he also worked in the Department of General Medicine at Al Azhar Medical College and Super Specialty Hospital in Thodupuzha and went on to receive a Diploma in Diabetes Management from the prestigious Apollo Hospitals Education and Research Foundation.

Moreover, Dr. Shigil also obtained a Fellowship in Upper and Lower GI Endoscopy from the World Laparoscopy Hospital in Gurgaon, Delhi and worked as an Assistant Professor and Consultant Physician in the Department of General Medicine at Al Azhar Medical College and Super Specialty Hospital from July 2018 to October 2021. After that, he also worked as an Assistant Professor and Consultant Physician at Mount Zion Medical College Hospital in Adoor, Pathanamthitta, before being appointed as the Administrator and Medical Director of Sree Ayyappa Medical College and Research Foundation in Vadasserikkara, Pathanamthitta.

The learned Doctor’s determination and dedication towards his patients is highly commendable and he is always acknowledged for diagnosing illness/disease, injuries, investigating, treating, and recommending patients to appropriate medical super specialist for any emergency and specialist intervention. He has an excellent understanding of current treatments as well as newer and emerging treatment modalities along with administrative, critical thinking abilities under crisis and high-pressure situations. His capability to make quick decisions and course of action under duress combined with his expertise in providing patients with the highest-quality primary and ongoing medical care is what makes him the most preferred medical expert.

 His struggle as a doctor after receiving his degree and working in various medical colleges paid off when he and his family launched St.George Healthcare in Kozhencherry, Pathanamthitta. Dr. Shigil's dedication and hard work, combined with the support and blessings of his family and relatives, led them to take over management of Sree Ayyappa Medical College and Research Foundation, Vadasserikkara in collaboration with PSN Charitable and Educational Trust. Dr. Shigil and his family plan to establish a medical college with 150 MBBS seats for the following academic year once the NMC inspection process has been completed.

The purpose of establishing the medical institution is to deliver affordable yet advanced quality healthcare to the poor, Sabrimala pilgrims, and a large catchment area of rural population surrounding the area. Dr. Shigil states that this is an ongoing endeavor and that he hopes to find a way to spread the word about his mission.

Dr Shigil has various certifications including the Doctorate in Medicine (General Medicine) (Honori Causa) World Peace Institute of United Nations- June 2022, Bloodborne Pathogens “NHCPS-Jan 2019”, Exercise and Mental Health “The Open University-Jan 2018”, Drug Development Process: Combating pain “The Open University -Jan 2018”, Gene Therapy “The Open University -Jan 2018” and others. He is currently appointed as the Medical Director of St.George Healthcare, St.George Speech and Audiology, St.George Dialysis Centre
