 About the event 

“YATRA: A Journey” curated by the Anga Kala Kathak Academy in partnership with Anga Kala Dance Company and Arts Without Borders at the Breen Center for Performing Arts this month on September 24th. The event will showcase live dance and music performances by some of the prominent Indian Classical musicians and artists in the United States. 

Conceptualized by Smt. Antara Datta, Artistic Director of Anga Kala Kathak Academy and non-profit organization Arts Without Borders, the event celebrates the decade-long artistic creativity and contribution to the field of Indian classical dance in the US. Through live dance performances, it showcases the journey of mankind through the pandemic. The event has a nominal entry fee, and will be of particular interest to Indian and South Asian communities in the region.

About the Artists

Antara Datta started learning Kathak at the tender age of five from Srimati Laxmi Bannerjee in Kolkata, India. She holds a double diploma in Kathak from the Bangiya Sangeet Parishad in Kolkata and the Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad, India. She received advanced training in the Lucknow gharana of Kathak from “Sringar Mani“ Srimati Anuradha Nag (Artistic director of the Tarangini School of dance, San Jose, California). To hone her skills further Antara Datta also receives training from Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj and Vidushi Saswati Sen, during her annual trips to India at Kalashram, New Delhi. In addition, she regularly visits Mahagami (a dance Gurukul in Aurangabad, India) to receive intensive training from Guru Parwati Dutta. Antara receives Taal Vidya training from Guruji, Pandit Divvang Vakil. Antara has performed extensively in both India and abroad and is the Artistic Director of Anga Kala Kathak Academy and Anga Kala Dance Company. She also serves as the President of Arts Without Borders. Antara taught Kathak as an adjunct faculty in Cornish College of Arts Seattle, WA in 2010, Kent State University Kent in Winter 2014, and University of Akron, OH in Winter 2017.

Hans Utter, Ph.D. is an exponent of the prominent Imdad Khan gharana, an unbroken line of seven generations which has made significant contributions to the development of classical Indian music. As a disciple of Ustad Shujaat Khan, son of the illustrious sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan, Hans has trained intensively in India for nearly two decades. He has performed Turkish and Arabic music around the United States. He is the recipient of eighteen national and international awards and grants, and has worked with artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, John Abercrombie, Ustad Shujaat Khan, Latif Bolat, Turkana, Steve Gorn and Chuck D.

Anirban Bhattacharyya is a Hindustani classical vocalist of the Patiala Gharana and a Social Anthropologist from Kolkata. A senior disciple of Padmabhushan Ajoy Chakraborty, Anirban is a President of India Gold and Silver Medalist from All India Radio in Khayal and Thumri, and Champion in Thumri from State Music Academy in 2010. Anirban is also a National Scholar in Rabindra Sangeet and had the opportunity of learning from and performing with the legendary Kathak maestro Padma Vibhushan Birju Maharaj all over India and abroad. Anirban has been invited to perform in some of the most prestigious festivals in the UK and has extensively toured the USA, UK, UAE, South Africa, Malaysia, and Bangladesh. Anirban is presently pursuing PhD in Sociology from Shiv Nadar University and will be coming to the USA in Fall 2022 on a Fulbright Doctoral Research Fellowship. Apart from being a singer, Anirban is also a professional Music Composer, Producer and Arranger.

Mike Lukshis, A classical Tabla soloist and accompanist. He has established himself as a leading performer in the NYC area, in addition to extensive touring of North America and India. He has been studying exclusively with renowned Tabla composer and Guru, Pandit Divyang Vakil, in an intimate Gurukul style of training. He is also a full time teacher and manager of the Taalim School of Indian Music, serving diverse communities around NYC and NJ.

Smt.Kalyani Veturi

Mayuri Dance Academy, Cleveland, Ohio

Smt.Kalyani Veturi is an accomplished artist in the field of Kuchipudi residing in Cleveland, Ohio,USA. She began her training with the guru Sree Dr.Vedantam Ramalinga Sastry, who is currently working as principal of Siddhendra Kala Kshetram, Kuchipudi. Under his tutelage, she has embedded the rigorous techniques and the strong foundation Kuchipudi along with the satvika abhinaya. Not only does she hold a Master’s degree in Computer Science,but also holds Graded Artist status from Doordarshan. While residing in India, Kalyani performed along with her guru all over South India at reputed Auditoriums.After performing extensively in South India, Kalyani’s journey with kuchipudi has continued to the United States which has become her home after her marriage, and is where she has evolved as an independent choreographer and performer. In an effort to raise awareness for Kuchipudi among different cultures and generations she founded the Sree Mayuri Dance Academy in 2015. She and her students actively participate and perform for different organizations in and around North East America.

The Nartanam Dance Academy (NDA) was founded by Sudha Kiranmayi Totapally, with the sole purpose of promoting and propagating Indian classical dance form to the current generation. NDA is the place for young students to discover their love for the arts, hone their talent, and evolve into graceful, creative dancers. Edify Asian Indian classical dance styles of Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam along with Grace, Discipline, Posture, Art, Rhythm, and Balance to all interested and dedicated personnel. Students of Nartanam Dance Academy have performed at various prestigious venues like Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Cavaliers Pre- game show and Half-Time show, One World Day Celebrations, PlayHouse square, prestigious Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival and many major festivals in around Ohio and USA. Nartanam Dance Academy, Broadview heights-based, Dance Academy is imparting the zeal to learn and promote these ancient dance forms to the younger generation.
