Dorcas Poloczek Y. Reyes: A Living Legacy of Resilience, Faith, and Art
The Artista Achievers Awards 2025 has proudly bestowed the prestigious AAA Iconic Filipina of Literature and Arts Award to a remarkable woman whose life story is nothing short of inspiring: Dorcas Poloczek Y. Reyes (also known as Dorie Reyes Polo). Her journey, from her early days in Cavite to becoming a globally recognized poet, writer, and artist, serves as a powerful testament to resilience, passion, and a deep connection to culture and creativity.
A Life Rooted in Family, Service, and Faith
Born on December 29, 1955, in Talon, Amadeo, Cavite, Dorcas is the youngest of fourteen children of Primo Montoya Reyes and Mercedes Villanueva Bautista Reyes. Raised in a close-knit family, her childhood shaped her strong sense of community and commitment to serving others. In 1978, she married Martin Poloczek, and together they raised two sons and now enjoy the joy of having a granddaughter.
Her educational journey began at Talon Elementary School and Tagaytay City Institute, before she pursued a career in healthcare. She trained as a midwife at St. Anthony’s School in Batangas and later advanced her studies in nursing at the Philippine Christian University in Dasmariñas.
In the early stages of her professional life, Dorcas ventured abroad, moving to West Germany. There, she made a mark in the medical field as a Registered Nurse, specializing as an ICU Nurse at Sana Krankenhaus in Hürth. Her medical expertise continued to evolve, and she specialized further in Wound Assessment and Palliative & Oncology Care Nursing at Medicare Grevenbroich. Dorcas worked tirelessly in these roles until her retirement in 2019.
A Passion for Literature and Arts
While Dorcas dedicated much of her life to healthcare, her love for literature and the arts flourished alongside her professional career. This creative spirit became her anchor as she navigated through life’s challenges. Through poetry and writing, Dorcas found a way to express the experiences that defined her—triumphs, trials, and moments of personal growth.
A breast cancer survivor since 2019, Dorcas' life journey has not been without its struggles. However, rather than letting adversity define her, she has used it as a catalyst to create powerful works of literature that speak to the resilience of the human spirit. Her poetic voice has grown stronger through each challenge, and her ability to transform hardship into art is what sets her apart as a writer.
In 2022, she published her first collection of poetry, Tala at Tula ni Dorie Reyes Polo, which garnered praise for its honest exploration of life's complexities. Dorcas also contributed her voice to anthologies like Own A Poem and Horizons Creed, where her work resonated deeply with readers across the globe.
Recognition and Global Impact
Dorcas' artistry has earned her recognition both in the Philippines and internationally. In 2018, she received the Tala Champion Award in Paris, a recognition of her outstanding contribution to the literary arts. Her awards continued to accumulate in the following years: the 2023 Woman of the Year in Rome, the Gintong Parangal Award for Woman of Influence, and the Asia’s Golden Legacy Award.
As an advocate for Filipino culture and the arts, she was honored with the Asia Pacific Luminaire Award as Asia’s Nationalistic Poet of the Year. Her role as a leader in the literary and diaspora communities further solidified her influence. Dorcas has been an active member of several organizations, including ENFID Germany and ENFID Europe, where she served as Treasurer, Auditor, and Board Director. Her commitment to the arts and Filipino heritage was further acknowledged with her role as the Callé Artista PH Adviser and PENTASI B World Poet Laureate – Philippines in 2025.
