Empowering working women

Women in India have long faced significant challenges and obstacles, but in recent years there has been a growing recognition of their contributions and potential. While progress has been slow, there are signs that women are beginning to break through barriers and establish themselves as key players in the Indian building India’s economy.

Historically, traditional gender roles in India have kept women out of the workplace and limited their opportunities for economic empowerment. Women were expected to prioritize their roles as wives, mothers, and caretakers over pursuing careers or starting businesses. This attitude was reinforced by social and economic barriers, including limited access to education and financial resources, as well as discrimination and harassment in the workplace.

Fortunately, there have been some positive developments in recent years. The Indian government has implemented policies aimed at promoting women's entrepreneurship and encouraging greater participation in the country's economy. For instance, targeted programs have been launched to provide female entrepreneurs with access to credit and technical assistance (mudra loan). In addition, work places are increasingly recognizing the potential benefits of greater gender diversity in their leadership teams and workforces.

Nonetheless, there is still much work to be done. The economic and social barriers facing women in work can be significant, and many continue to face discrimination and harassment in the workplace. In addition to these challenges, women entrepreneurs must also grapple with traditional societal expectations that can make it difficult to balance family and work responsibilities.

Despite these challenges, there are many inspiring success stories of women who have broken through these barriers and established success in India. Many of these women serve as role models and advocates for other aspiring women, and their stories serve as a testament to the potential and untapped talent of female workforce

in the country.

Overall, while women in India may face unique challenges, there is hope that with ongoing efforts towards greater inclusion and empowerment, they will continue to make important contributions to the country's economic growth and prosperity. By supporting women  and providing them with the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to succeed, India can help unlock the full potential of its female workforce and move towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

Major development in the field of women empowerment and towards their financial independence is -the Maternity Benefit Amendment Act, 2017, introduced several changes to provisions related to maternity benefits in India, including the provision of creche facilities. The Act mandates that all establishments with 50 or more employees must provide a creche facility within a specific distance from the workplace. The facility should be available for employees to use for infants up to the age of six months, and after that, it is optional.

The creche facility must provide adequate space and amenities for children, including a feeding room, sleeping area, play area, and toilet facilities. The facility must be run by trained personnel, and the employer is required to provide allowances for their expenses.

The Act also specifies that employers cannot discriminate against women employees who utilize the creche facility and that these employees should be given the same opportunities for career advancement as their male counterparts.

The introduction of the creche facility amendment act is a significant step towards creating a more supportive work environment for working mothers in India. It helps to promote gender equality and provides mothers with the support they need to balance work and family responsibilities.
