Beyond Conflict: Dr. Joseph K Thomas' Bold Proposal for Peace in the Israel-Palestine War
- Could you give a synopsis of your work and how it tackles the main issues facing the modern world?
Joseph : Israel-Palestine War is an intricate and enduring saga of one of the world's most entrenched conflicts. From its genesis with the Balfour Declaration in 1918 to the startling October 2023 invasion, this book presents a sweeping panorama of the Israeli-Palestinian discord. The unruly battle lines between Israel and Palestine are less a question of substantial differences in opinion and more a matter of opposing ideologies and values.
A person does not simply turn to violence for no good reason. One should understand how Palestinian people perceive conflict-related events and how feelings can influence a person’s tendency to commit acts of violence. A person’s inclination toward violence is influenced both by hate and anger as well as by feelings of humiliation. Violent tendencies become amplified above all when people regard humiliation in public spaces as intentional denigration or when that humiliation plays out on the world stage.
My heart aches, for I know that the average Palestinian and the average Israeli never asked for this violence and hatred. They yearned for something far simpler: to exist peacefully, side by side, on the land they call home.
- What motivated you to write this book, and what knowledge or experiences do you offer the subject?
Joseph :: Delving into the human toll of war and the diplomatic impasses, I tried to dissect the conflict's multifaceted layers. Military maneuvers, economic ramifications, and the media's role in shaping perceptions are scrutinized, alongside the environmental and health crises, notably water scarcity and contamination.
As I reflect on my life's work, from the trenches of military service, to the echelons of corporate leadership, my experience as an educationist and now as an author, it strikes me that the essence of my journey has been about understanding the complex interplay of systems—be it in defense, business, or education. With my multifaceted experiences have equipped me with a unique vantage point from which to view the political landscape of Israel and Palestine.
- Could you outline some of the most important lessons or revelations that readers should anticipate from your book?
Joseph : This book probes prospects for peace, drawing insights from historical endeavors and offering a roadmap for reconciliation in this deeply fractured region. This is the time to rewrite history, to heal the wounds of the past, and to build a legacy of peace. Together, we can turn the promise of this book into a reality.
Spanning over half a dozen wars and countless attempts at peace negotiations, the conflict between Israel and Palestine is one of the most complex and enduring in the Middle East. If I were to conduct a survey in which I asked people to name a never-ending conflict, the one between Israel and Palestine would likely come in first place.
Nobody turn into violence for fun, maybe their own father was arrested, or their brother shot. Many instances of radicalization are preceded by a traumatic experience of political violence, followed by hate and a desire for revenge.
- Could you provide any case studies or real-world examples from your book that exemplify the ideas you talk about?
Joseph :Incorporating real-world examples and case studies can significantly enhance the engagement and relevance of each chapters. It provides concrete context, making abstract concepts more relatable and understandable. When you can see how theoretical principles apply in practical situations, it becomes easier to grasp the concepts and remember them effectively. No comparison is complete without visual aids, and in this case, GDP growth rates, unemployment levels, and income distribution would speak volumes. Such visualizations can starkly highlight the impact of each party's economic philosophies and their efficacy in real-world scenarios.
- What specific difficulties or roadblocks did you face while writing this book, and how did you get beyond them?
Joseph : My book, Israel – Palestine War is a case study of politics of emotions. Emotional because of the cause and consequences of constant physical and ideological battles faced by both sides. Considering how peace can be viably implemented requires deeper comprehension of emotions as well as their role in prolonging conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians.
Many consider the conflict between Israel and Palestine as intractable. The role of emotions such as humiliation and empathy in this seemingly irreconcilable struggle. In this landscape, simplicity carries the day. Complex theories and jargon are eschewed for a language that speaks directly to the heart of the reader. These images and stories are not just snapshots; they are the emblems of solidarity and strength.
- What benefits do you think readers will experience after reading your book, and how will it improve their lives?
Joseph : The question of how best to achieve lasting peace in the region is a difficult one. But the significance of psychological factors in the Middle East conflict, both in fomenting violence and in encouraging peaceful solutions. The peace accord might look great on paper, but when you’ve got two parties who neither trust nor empathize with one another, even the best deal will end up as wastepaper sooner or later. That’s why its important to build the trust first than talking.
Even though I am a Soldier and fought war, my heart aches when I watch TV bearing witness to the unfolding tragedy in Israel and Palestine. I see children, innocent and full of hope, their lives cut short in the crossfire of a brutal conflict. I see families running through the streets, their faces etched with shock, grief, anger, and pain. The deafening sounds of rockets, mortar, and bombs pierce the air, while tanks roll in, leaving destruction in their wake.
I feel the pain of a parent who has lost a child. I feel the anguish of a community torn apart by violence. I feel the weight of history, the legacy of conflict that stretches back generations. I feel the collective yearning for peace, buried beneath layers of fear and mistrust.
7.How does your book continue to be relevant and flexible for readers throughout time in a world that is changing quickly?
Joseph :In these moments of profound sorrow, it’s essential to remember that pain transcends borders and politics. It’s universal. It doesn’t discriminate based on ethnicity, religion, or nationality. The tears of a grieving mother, regardless of where she stands, are the same tears that fall on both sides of this conflict.
The path to peace may be long and fraught with challenges, but I remain convinced that empathy and compassion can light the way. Let us remember the shared humanity that binds us all, and let our collective ache for a better world be the catalyst for change. We feel, and in our shared pain, we find the strength to heal and rebuild.
“The fight for peace and the fight for the planet are, after all, two sides of the same coin.”
