P. Sudharani: Preserving Heritage, Empowering Generations
- Sudharani, is a distinguished Odissi dancer, cultural ambassador, and visionary founder of the Sudha Institute of Odissi. A post-graduate in Odissi dance from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, she is also a recipient of the prestigious National Scholarship awarded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Her artistic journey has been shaped under the guidance of some of the greatest legends of Odissi, including Padma Shri Late Sanjukta Panigrahi, Late Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, and Late Smt. Bidyut Lata Chaudhary. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to art, culture, and society, she was recently honoured with the prestigious Odiya Pravasi Ratna 2026 Award.
Over a remarkable career spanning more than three decades, Sudharani has represented the rich heritage of Indian classical dance on some of the most prestigious platforms in the country. She has had the privilege of performing before former Presidents of India Shri Zail Singh and Shri Shankar Dayal Sharma, as well as former Prime Minister Shri Chandrashekhar.
Her association with national events has continued over the years, including several performances before the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. These include appearances at the Kankaria Festival, the Golden Jubilee celebrations of IIM Ahmedabad, and the historic inauguration of the solar-powered 3D Projection Mapping Show at the iconic Sun Temple, Modhera.
For nearly a decade, Sudharani has also been closely associated with the prestigious Ahmedabad International Literature Festival. Along with her students from the Sudha Institute of Odissi, she has been a regular performer at the festival, enriching its cultural landscape through captivating presentations of India's classical dance heritage.
Beyond her accomplishments as a performer, Sudharani's most enduring contribution lies in her unwavering commitment to cultural education and social empowerment. Through the Sudha Institute of Odissi, she has spent the last 30 years nurturing generations of dancers and promoting the timeless values of discipline, devotion, and artistic excellence. Her efforts extend far beyond conventional teaching, as she has consistently opened the doors of classical arts to underprivileged children from diverse backgrounds, often providing training free of cost.
